One of Vermont's oldest and most historic towns. Site of the monumental 306 foot obelisque commemorating the Battle of Bennington (1777), a key Revolutionary War battle. It also boasts an impressive "old" town of colonial era buildings on the heights above the town proper, as well as a thriving Downtown. The first of the controversial Hampshire Grants in 1749, (not settled until 1761) Bennington got it's name from the Governor of New Hampshire, Benning Wentworth. The town is overlooked by the 2,300 ft. Mount Anthony. Retaining much of it's historic flavor, Bennington is the gateway to Vermont for many travelers.
