Settled in the 1760's primarily by Church of England adherents, Arlington was a Tory stronghold and yet was also the home of Green Mountain Boys leaders Seth Warner and Remember Baker. Located on the banks of the famous Battenkill River ("Ondawa" was the Indian name for the river, "Battenkill" is Dutch). Many famous people lived here including Norman Rockwell and Dorothy Canfield Fisher. About a half mile down Route 313 was the site of a three hundred year old pine which is said to be the model for the Vermont State Seal, as sketched by a British officer on an ox-horn cup (circa 1780) while staying at the home of then governor Thomas Chittenden.
