The Vermont Covered
Bridge Museum

Bennington, VT: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow described a covered bridge as a "Brief darkness leading from the light to light."

Vermont Covered Bridge Museum in Bennington In the town of Bennington on June 14, the first covered bridge museum in the world will open on West Road. The Covered Bridge Museum is literally connected to the Bennington Center for the Natural and Cultural Arts (BCNCA), formerly known as the Bennington Center for the Arts.

The barn red structure is an exact replica of a Town lattice bridge. Inside is a model of a covered bridge complete with pastoral scene, delightful for children and adults to view.

A constant flow of donations has brought in an eclectic selection of vintage postcards and memorabilia depicting covered bridges throughout the state of Vermont. Included in this collection are vintage portraits of the designers of the bridges and of the structures themselves; not to mention an electric train model that will be on display to pass through the covered bridge premonstration for the amusement of young and old alike.

On display at the VCBM will be Anatomy of a Covered Bridge, complete with antique tools used in their construction; the Artful Covered Bridge, Covered Bridge Chronicles, The Natural Environment of the Covered Bridge, and many more are in the planning stage.

A theater will screen a film documentary in uninterrupted succession of the subject of covered bridges. The room will also be utilized for public programs.

VCBM is the culmination of a dream of Bruce Laumeister, who with his wife, Elizabeth Small, has established the Bennington Center for the Natural and Cultural Arts. Bruce and Elizabeth's wish is to encourage the Vermont way of life, preserve, educate and exhibit natural wildlife art, and Native American art and lifestyles.

To reach this goal, Bruce has summoned the expertise of Bennington's historian John Dostal; together they imagine VCBM to become a storehouse for covered bridge information and resources for Vermont covered bridges and more.

Bruce has solicited the services of Knowledge Environments, Inc., a North Adams, Massachusetts firm that specializes in delivering knowledge both through cutting edge technology and traditional educational systems.

Emiliano DeLaurentiis, the founder of the company, has directed the museum's film documentary about Vermont covered bridges and it will be available on DVD for purchase.

Working closely with Knowledge Environments, Inc. in coordinating and designing the museum's layout and exhibits is Robert Campanile. Robert has worked 9 years on diverse projects at the Museum of Natural History in NYC. He is past director and designer of the North Adams Museum of History and Science in North Adams, MA.

Enjoy your experience at The Vermont Covered Bridge Museum. While you are there, make sure to visit the additional displays and exhibits on view at the BCNCA, stroll the grounds, or simply enjoy the sweeping views.
